The Midwife

The Midwife by Jolina Petershein In life, some of the choices we make are the right choices, but are the hardest to let go. When Beth a young college student gives up her own child for adoption it is something she has never been able to get over. When her college professor comes to her and ask if she would be willing to be a surrogate him and his wife Beth was willing but was not prepared for the feelings and emotions that she was about to develop. The Midwife by Jolina Petershein is a striking narrative of a young girl who struggles to find her peace and to let go of the fear that has been consuming her life. We have all faced a time of loss and know to be true, as Beth learned, that true peace comes when we stop running and stop living in fear. Though we can struggle with understanding God’s plan, what we see in Beth’s journey is that our struggles and our fears can be relieved when we turn to Him completely and trust in His word.      ...

New Book Review "Minding Molly"

As is too often the case, our worlds can change suddenly, without warning, and without mercy. The journey of our lives becomes foreign, the road untested, and best with complications we never could have imagined. Our will, our hearts, and our faith are all put to great duress all at once without any tolerance or patience for our adaption. In “Minding Molly”, author Leslie Gould brings us the tale of a young girl faced with just such a trial, Molly Zook, whose father has just passed away. In his death, the security of the family farm becomes in doubt and as her mother’s health problems mount, Molly does her best to assume the responsibilities of the eldest child. As the pressure mounts, options narrow when Molly’s ailing mother decides that her daughter’s marriage to a neighbor offers a path of rescue. As the cruel, crooked hands of Fate once again play their game, Molly is awash in overwhelming affections for a newly arrived young Amish man from Montana, Leon. I enjoyed this boo...

Joann's Struggle

It was a  Saturday  morning In Paradise, Pennsylvania. Spring was in the air when a young Amish girl Joanna Fisher was getting ready with her family to head off to the first mud sale of the season. The whole family was excited for this day to come especially Joanna, as she was looking forward to spending the day with her best friend Chloe Esh. Shortly upon their arrival at the mud sale Joanna and Chloe met up, they were both anxious to start their day looking at the quilts and  having a good time, especially since Joanna was going to be staying all day with Chloe and her family. The day flew by and before Joanna and Chloe knew it Chloe's mom was calling for them so they could  be home before dark.  Joanna had told Chloe to go ahead she needed to make a quick stop and she would meet up with her and her family, but little did Joanna know or ever conceive of the fate that awaited her. Life is often overwhelming and far too often, when it is not, we l...

My visit with Amish friends

Over the course of the past couple of years, my husband and I have enjoyed the embrace of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In this warm setting, we have opened our hearts as the people of this beautiful country have opened theirs. Our time and journey in this wondrous place have led to new friendships including that of a young Amish woman who worked at a favored market. It was a Saturday when we went to our favorite market on an extended, if not spontaneous, day trip. We wanted to let our friend know that we would be back in August for a longer stay and hope to get together then. When we arrived, we saw another woman working in her place which was unusual. I approached the stand to ask about our friend and to my surprise, this woman already knew through her daughter. "Oh yes, you are Tina Loveless," she said, "my daughter has told me all about you. Please do come over, we would enjoy having you." We exchanged telephone numbers and let her know that would be i...
